Oscar Wildes 1890 Gothic masterpiece The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of the classic fin de siècle texts, but no one has ever definitively concluded what supernatural entity answers Dorians wish to remain forever young and beautiful while his portrait ages and is corrupted in his place (though many have tried!) But did you know that Wildes parents were folklorists, or that he grew up listening to stories of Irish fairy mischief? In this lecture, Dr. Sara Cleto and Dr. Brittany Warman of the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic argue that Wildes Irish roots - and his knowledge of Irish fairylore - offer several insights into the text well worth exploring!

Irelands landscape is often considered sacred, deeply intertwined with its history, mythology, and spirituality. Many sites, both ancient and more recent, hold spiritual significance for both religious and secular traditions, including holy wells, stone circles, monastic sites, and prehistoric burial mounds. Many of these ancient sites are aligned with the movement of the solar and lunar cycles such as Bru na Boinne and Sliabh na Cailleach. These places, sometimes referred to as thin places, are believed to blur the lines between the earthly and the divine, offering spaces for contemplation and a sense of connection to the past. Joe leads small group tours to these ancient places giving a deeper insight into the Spiritual traditions that have spanned the ages.
