Oscar Wildes 1890 Gothic masterpiece The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of the classic fin de siècle texts, but no one has ever definitively concluded what supernatural entity answers Dorians wish to remain forever young and beautiful while his portrait ages and is corrupted in his place (though many have tried!) But did you know that Wildes parents were folklorists, or that he grew up listening to stories of Irish fairy mischief? In this lecture, Dr. Sara Cleto and Dr. Brittany Warman of the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic argue that Wildes Irish roots - and his knowledge of Irish fairylore - offer several insights into the text well worth exploring!

Today it is common to think of fairies as small, child-like, sparkly creatures with glittering wings and dresses made from flower petals. But the fae of traditional Irish folklore were no such things. Amoral, capricious, even malicious when they chose to be, the too-frequently forgotten fairies of times long past would, more often than not, haunt our nightmares. Join Dr. Sara Cleto and Dr. Brittany Warman of the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic as they explore the darker side of Irish fairylore through such creatures as the monstrous Dullahan and the mournful, horrifying Banshee.
Dr. Sara Cleto and Dr. Brittany Warman are award-winning folklorists, teachers, and writers with a combined 26 years in higher education and over one hundred publications.
